Mountain Combat: Addressing the Challenges of Vertical Terrain

Share

Covering a quarter of the Earth’s surface, mountains—often natural borders—present complex challenges for military operations. Mountain troops require specially designed and rigorously tested equipment and technologies to withstand the extreme conditions of these environments. The specificity of the terrain demands heightened attention to mobility, protection, and logistics, which are often far more complicated than in flat areas. As the inaugural International Mountain Troops Summit (SITM), organised by COGES EVENTS in partnership with the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade (27e BIM), approaches, we examine the primary material needs of mountain troops to successfully carry out their missions in such hostile conditions.

1. Mobility Adapted to Rugged Terrain

Mountainous terrains are characterised by steep slopes, rocky surfaces, and extreme weather conditions. To ensure effective mobility, mountain troops require specialised all-terrain vehicles. These must be capable of overcoming natural obstacles, transporting heavy equipment, and functioning in sub-zero temperatures without performance degradation.
Additionally, the use of reconnaissance drones has increased in recent years, enabling armed forces to monitor areas inaccessible on foot or by vehicle. These drones must be specifically adapted for high-altitude conditions, where thinner air and strong winds complicate operations.

2. Protection Against Extreme Conditions

Soldiers operating in mountainous regions face severe climatic conditions: high winds, frequent snowfall, and often sub-zero temperatures. Consequently, their uniforms and equipment must provide maximum thermal insulation while remaining lightweight and flexible. They must also resist moisture and abrasions caused by rocks and mountainous terrain.
Camouflage used by mountain troops must be optimised for these environments. Whether in snowy or rocky areas, uniforms and camouflage accessories must allow soldiers to blend seamlessly into their surroundings while remaining practical for movement.

3. Logistics and Supply

Supplying troops in mountainous terrain poses a major challenge for any army. Limited access to roads, rugged landscapes, and the remoteness of bases make transporting materials difficult. To address this, mountain forces can adopt innovative logistical solutions, such as autonomous drone delivery systems or ultra-light transport vehicles capable of navigating steep paths.
Modular supply systems, such as compact storage units and mobile facilities, are crucial for adapting to the temporary and often unpredictable nature of mountain operational bases. These systems must also ensure reliable energy access through solutions such as portable generators and solar systems for isolated areas.

4. Communications in Challenging Environments

Mountain troops face significant communication challenges. The topography often blocks radio and telecommunications signals. Armed forces need robust communication systems that can operate under difficult conditions and provide connectivity even in the most remote areas. This includes the use of long-range radios, portable satellites, and encrypted communication devices designed to withstand interference caused by mountainous terrain.

5. Survival and Health in Hostile Environments

Surviving in inhospitable environments requires specialised survival equipment. Mountain forces must adapt quickly to freezing temperatures and rapidly changing weather conditions. This includes comprehensive survival kits, such as portable shelters, individual heating systems, and compact, high-calorie rations to sustain physical endurance. Additionally, specialised medical equipment is essential for treating common injuries related to falls, frostbite, or altitude-induced heatstroke.

The challenges faced by mountain troops demand material and technological responses tailored to extreme conditions and the complexity of rugged terrain. The success of their missions depends on continuous innovation in mobility, logistics, communication, and survival. The International Mountain Troops Summit (SITM) 2025 will play a pivotal role in this effort. By bringing together international stakeholders—including industry leaders, start-ups, academic institutions, and specialised military units—the summit will explore the latest advancements in equipment and solutions for mountainous environments. This event will connect the specific needs of armed forces with innovations in the field and foster international partnerships aimed at enhancing operational capabilities in these challenging settings.

Thus, SITM 2025 positions itself as a key platform to exchange insights on the technologies that will shape the future of mountain military operations!
